Power supply, also known as electricity supply, usually refers to the electronic device that provides active power to electronic equipment (such as servers and computers), i.e., the power supply also refers to the power source.

The main function of a power supply is to convert power from a source to a voltage, current, or frequency that can be used by electronic equipment to enable it to function properly, so a power supply is sometimes referred to as an electric power converter. Some power supplies are separate from electronic devices, while others are built into electronic devices; for example, computers and some consumer electronic devices have built-in power supplies. Another important function of a power supply is to control the current consumed by the load within a safe range and to shut off the current in the event of an electronic device failure.

All power supplies have an electrical “input link” to receive current from the source and one or more “output links” to transmit current to the desired device or component.
